You may already know that BOTOX® helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles that you already have. But what if we told you that BOTOX® may also be used to slow the formation of wrinkles in the first place? Can you really get preventative BOTOX® to keep fine lines and wrinkles from forming?
What is Preventative BOTOX®?
To understand preventative BOTOX®, it helps to know a little bit about what causes wrinkles in the upper face. When you make certain facial expressions, such as smiling, frowning or squinting, the muscles in your face contract. When the facial muscles rest, the skin resumes its smooth appearance. Over time, however, those muscles start to weaken, and the skin doesn’t bounce back into place like it used to. That’s when fine lines and wrinkles begin to appear, such as crow’s feet, forehead lines, and brow lines. The goal of preventative BOTOX® is to catch the development of those wrinkles early and intervene before they become more pronounced and noticeable.
Does Preventative BOTOX® Really Work?
As we age, our skin loses elasticity while the underlying muscle weakens. Preventative BOTOX® works because it controls and relaxes the muscles responsible for the formation of lines and wrinkles while reducing the appearance of lines on the skin. However, BOTOX® is just one tool in a whole kit of preventative aging treatments. Preventative BOTOX® is more successful if you couple it with other methods to increase the health and youthfulness of your skin. Wear sunscreen and moisturize daily. Talk to your aesthetic providers about other ways you can fortify your skin with professional chemical peels and microneedling treatments. How BOTOX® Slows the Progression of Fine Lines and Wrinkles
BOTOX® relaxes the facial muscles responsible for the formation of lines. The active ingredient, botulinum toxin, acts as a localized muscle relaxer. When an experienced aesthetic injection specialist injects Botox into the muscle, it will begin to relax over several days. Lines and wrinkles soften in their appearance during this time, providing a more youthful look. After 3-4 months, repeated treatments are required to maintain results. However, consecutive appointments often require fewer injections and less Botox. Some patients can even begin to allow more time between their appointments. That’s because Botox trains the muscles over time, requiring less medication to see results.
BOTOX® is so effective at reducing muscle movements that it’s also FDA-approved for patients with blepharospasm (chronic eyelid twitching).
Long-Term BOTOX® Safety
Some people worry about the hazards of BOTOX®, but there are a lot of misconceptions about the treatment. According to reputable medical professionals, BOTOX® is safe and effective and has more than 10 FDA-approvals for both cosmetic and medical applications. When injected by an experienced aesthetic injection specialist, BOTOX® is safe and effective.
A clinical study carried out over 13 years demonstrated that individuals who regularly received BOTOX® treatments had noticeably reduced lines and wrinkles than those who received minimal treatment. The study found no evidence that the Botox injections posed a health risk. Unless you’re allergic to the injectable or have a health history that prevents you from safely using BOTOX®, it is considered safe.
While BOTOX® is safe and FDA-approved, unlicensed knockoffs are not. Fake Botox treatments can be very dangerous, so it is imperative that you never seek a procedure from anyone other than a board-certified medical professional who is also an experienced aesthetic injection specialist.
BOTOX® isn’t the only FDA-approved cosmetic wrinkle relaxer, however. Dysport and Xeomin are both effective botulinum toxin treatments that work very well for many patients. If BOTOX® isn’t quite right for your needs, Dysport or Xeomin could be effective alternatives for preventative Botox.
Is Preventative BOTOX® Right For You?
While preventative Botox is an excellent option for many people, you should still do your research before committing to the treatment. To find out if you’re a good candidate for treatment, it’s best to schedule a consultation with an aesthetic injection specialist. However, as a rule, anyone who is pregnant or nursing or has ever had an allergic reaction to any botulinum toxin treatment should not receive Botox, Dysport, or Xeomin. Other contraindications may include certain chronic health concerns or prescriptions that may interfere with your treatment.
