Pre-treatment Instructions & Expectations

To make the most out of your upcoming chemical peel, please follow our pre-treatment instructions.

Contraindications to Chemical Peels: Pregnancy, actively breastfeeding, currently using Accutane, active sunburn, or open wounds.

Pre-Treatment Skincare Recommendations

Your skin will heal best from a chemical peel if your at-home regimen supports a healthy skin barrier. Some of our favorite products at Skin by lovely to include in a pre-peel (or any time) regimen are:

One week before your appointment, please avoid the following treatments:

  • Electrolysis
  • Waxing
  • Depilatory Creams
  • Laser Hair Removal
  • Dermaplanning

3-7 days before your appointment, please discontinue the use of the following products:

  • Azaleic Acid
  • Lactic Acid
  • Citric Acid
  • Retinol/Tretinoin/Retin-A/Vitamin A
  • Glycolic Acid
  • Benzoyl Peroxide
  • Malic Acid
  • Salicylic Acid
  • Vitamin C
  • Tartaric Acid
  • Any product labelled AHA/BHA
  • Any product that uses the word ‘scrub’ in its descriptio

*If you suffer from cold sores/fever blister – take Valtrex 3 days prior to treatment to prevent an outbreak

Avoid shaving the facial region for 2-3 days prior to treatment

  • The first two days your skin may look a little tan, bronzed, or pink. It may also feel a bit tight before the peeling begins.
  • Treat your skin like a sunburn – avoid sun exposure, excess sweating, and heat.
  • During the peeling phase you must avoid sun exposure. Reapply your sunscreen at least 3 times per day.
  • Do not “help” the skin to peel. NO pulling, rubbing, scrubbing, or peeling the skin as this can cause scarring or hyperpigmentation.
  • If any post-peel products sting or irritate beyond your tolerance, reach out to your provider for alternatives.
  • The amount of visible peeling you will experience varies greatly. You will peel as much as your skin needs to peel. Peeling is a side effect of treatment, not the goal!
  • Days 3, 4, and 5 are the typical days of peeling. By day 6 most exfoliation has subsided.
  • If you are excessively dry or irritated, add a light layer of Alastin Soothe + Protect Recovery balm to provide a protective barrier.
